Description:
Dutasteride is a prescription medication that inhibits 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is primarily used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) by reducing prostate size and improving urinary symptoms.

Dutasteride is also sometimes prescribed off-label for male pattern hair loss, because lowering DHT can help reduce hair follicle miniaturization.

Common side effects: decreased libido, erectile or ejaculation problems, and breast tenderness/enlargement. It can also lower PSA levels, which is important when interpreting prostate-cancer screening results.
